#7 – Jan & Steve

Jan lay in Steve’s bed, a fine sheen of sweat covering her body. With her head resting on his chest, she listened as his heartbeat slowed after the exertions of their love-making. As she looked round the stark surroundings, completely devoid of pictures or ornaments, she felt his room lacked a woman’s touch. There was a cobweb above the wardrobe where the wall met the ceiling.

She took a breath. “I think Andy knows.”

“What? Knows about us?” Steve suddenly sat up, pushing Jan off his chest in the process.

Jan also sat up, arranging her pillow to support her back. She shook her head. “Not us, no. But I think he suspects I’m up to something.”

“Has he accused you of fucking around behind his back?”

She paused for a second. “Is that what this is? Me fucking around?”

“Huh?” Steve frowned.

“Jesus. Men!” She rolled her eyes. “I’d have described it as having an affair or seeing someone else, or even taking a lover. But you just see it as me fucking around behind my husband’s back.”

Steve held up his hands. “Okay, sorry. I admit that wasn’t the best way to describe what we have, but you caught me by surprise. Has he asked you about it?”

“Not in words, no. But he’s acting really strange.”

“Strange how?”

“It’s hard to describe. He talks in short sentences, just saying what he needs to say. There’s no light conversation or chatting about unimportant stuff anymore. It’s like we’re strangers.”

“That doesn’t sound like he suspects adultery. I think if he did—he’d say so. It sounds more like he’s just pre-occupied. Maybe he’s got things on his mind to do with work or something like—”

“Andy isn’t the type to make accusations without being certain. I actually did a detour on the way here to make sure I wasn’t being followed.”

Steve sat forward. “Are you serious? Do you honestly think he’d miss a rugby game and follow you to see if you’re really going shopping?”

“No, I know for a fact he’s refereeing a game in Hull this afternoon. But I wondered if he’d hired a private detective to follow me.”

“You think he’d do that?” Steve sounded incredulous.

Jan sighed. “I don’t know, maybe I’m just being paranoid.”

Steve stroked her back. “I’m sure it’s probably something else that’s on his mind.”

“He’s started being much more forceful in bed.” Jan focused her eyes on the cobweb while Steve processed this information.

“How do you mean, forceful?”

Finally, Jan met his eyes. She couldn’t read his expression, but didn’t want to hurt his feelings. “He’s more aggressive in his love-making.”

Steve smiled, and Jan realised he was aware of her reticence. “Jan, I know you’re a married woman who sleeps with her husband every night. You don’t have to worry about admitting the two of you have sex—I’m not a jealous schoolboy.”

Jan held his hand. “I know, but I don’t want to rub your nose in it.”

Steve put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close, kissed her cheek. “Do you want a drink or anything?”

Jan was about to shake her head when she changed her mind.
